Chippewa church votes to leave presbytery
Thursday, April 30, 2009

Chippewa United Presbyterian Church has voted 104-1 to leave the Presbyterian Church (USA) for the more theologically conservative Evangelical Presbyterian Church.

It is the second church in Beaver-Butler Presbytery to do so. Three Pittsburgh Presbytery congregations have switched and one in Washington Presbytery is in civil litigation over the right to take its property when it did so. The 174-member Chippewa church cited concerns with the Presbyterian Church (USA) debates and policy on abortion, sexuality, biblical authority and the significance of Jesus Christ.

The Chippewa case had been in church court since July, when the presbytery agreed 71-27 to release the congregation's property in return for several years of continued support for the presbytery and its missionaries. Three commissioners challenged that in church court, arguing that the denomination had provided money to start the congregation and should be reimbursed. A settlement was reached March 30 in which the congregation will pay an additional $46,000 over 10 years.
