A school bus carrying the Bethel Park High School band to South Carolina was involved in a traffic accident in which a motorist was killed early today, the school district said on its Web site.
None of the students, teachers or chaperones was injured in the crash, although their bus was disabled.
The bus, transporting the band on its spring music trip for a competition in Myrtle Beach, had been traveling east, just north of Beckley, W.Va., at about 3 a.m. when a westbound vehicle crossed the grassy median.
The other vehicle rolled into a ditch, and the driver was killed, school officials said. Authorities in West Virginia this morning had not confirmed details of the accident.
The Bethel Park bus was delayed for about three hours until another one was sent to continue the trip.
Many of the students, staff, and parents made cell phone calls to their homes to report the accident.
Jack Bitner said his son, Adam, a senior and a clarinet player in the band, startled his parents with the early morning call, but he quickly put their minds at ease with his report.
"He said he and other kids are fine," Mr. Bitner said this morning.
