The Arizona Cardinals released running back Edgerrin James with one year remaining on his contract, a development expected since late in the season.
The team also announced yesterday that it released cornerback Rod Hood and defensive end Travis LaBoy.
James had 794 carries for 2,895 yards and 16 touchdowns in his three seasons in Arizona. His resurgence in the playoffs gave Arizona the running game it needed.
James was benched for seven games in the season but came back to have a solid performance in the playoffs, where the Cardinals lost to the Steelers in Super Bowl XLIII. He said late in the season that he expected the Cardinals to release him by mutual agreement.
Missouri quarterback Chase Daniel, a former Heisman Trophy finalist who wasn't chosen in the NFL draft, agreed to terms with Washington. Daniel is expected to join the Redskins for minicamp this weekend. He will likely enter training camp in July battling Colt Brennan for the third-string job behind starter Jason Campbell and backup Todd Collins, although Campbell's job has been far from secure during an offseason in which the Redskins targeted Jay Cutler and Mark Sanchez.
Also, the Redskins were awarded running back Marcus Mason off waivers from the New York Jets. Mason led the NFL in rushing in the preseason last year while with the Redskins, but he was cut and signed to the Baltimore Ravens practice squad. He then was signed by the Jets and was inactive for seven games. The Jets waived him Monday, and he was awarded to the Redskins yesterday.
Unhappy cornerback Sheldon Brown says he will report to mandatory minicamp this weekend so that he's prepared to play somewhere this season. Brown wants a trade and speculated he could be bumped from the starting lineup after Philadelphia acquired cornerback Ellis Hobbs from the Patriots last week. Still, the seven-year veteran will attend camp to avoid daily fines of up to $14,000.
New Orleans released veteran defensive tackle Brian Young, who played only half of last season because of problems with his left knee that lingered into the current offseason.
Quarterback John Beck was released by Miami two years after he was taken in the second round of the NFL draft. The move wasn't a surprise after Miami acquired West Virginia quarterback Pat White in the second round of the draft Saturday. The Dolphins have two other quarterbacks -- starter Chad Pennington and Chad Henne, a rookie last year. Beck went 0-4 starting as a rookie under coach Cam Cameron in 2007. He played in five games, fumbled seven times and threw three interceptions. He did not play last year under new coach Tony Sparano.
Texas receiver Quan Cosby agreed to terms with Cincinnati after going undrafted over the weekend.
