Monday, April 27, 2009

The Pittsburgh Science of Learning Center -- a collaboration between Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh -- has won a second $25 million grant over five years for studying how people learn and seeing how that knowledge can be used to improve education.

The center started in 2004 with an initial $25 million grant over five years. Both grants are from the National Science Foundation.

The center conducts its research in more than 50 schools and colleges nationwide in a manner similar to the way medical schools and hospitals work together.

Schools include Community Day School in Squirrel Hill, Hampton High School, North Hills Junior High School, Riverview Junior/Senior High School, Wilkinsburg High School and Steel Valley High, Middle and elementary schools. Colleges include Grove City College; Penn State University at University Park; Penn State Behrend; St. Vincent College; and Washington & Jefferson College.
