Brooklyn artist Janet Zweig will present her proposal for a memorial artwork in East End's Mellon Park at a community meeting at 10 a.m. tomorrow at Pittsburgh Center for the Arts' Simmons Hall, 1047 Shady Ave.
The installation honors the memory of Ann Katharine Seamans, a dancer, artist and Wesleyan University student who died in a car accident in the Strip District in 1999 at the age of 19. From childhood on, she enjoyed spending time in the garden with family and friends.
Zweig's design embeds up to 150 softly glowing fiber-optic lights in the lawn of the park's walled garden, representing stars in their precise pattern over Pittsburgh on the day of Seamans' birth in November 1979.
La Quatra Bonci, Pittsburgh landscape architects, will present their plans for the rest of the garden restoration.
"We look forward to hearing the comment of the community as this project is intended to engage and uplift park visitors," said Meg Cheever, president and CEO of the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy, which is overseeing the project.
Zweig also will talk about this project and her other work at a free public lecture at 6 tonight at Ellis School, Seamans' alma mater. Reservations are requested: www.proartstickets.org or 412-394-3353.
