Even though next week's premiere of "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" will take place in Tempe, Ariz., instead of Zelienople, the borough's attempt to land the movie premier did not go unnoticed.
"We are impressed to be associated with a community that put up such an effort," said Tempe Mayor Hugh Hallman.
Zelienople was in the running to host the premiere because of an online contest that began earlier this month: The American ZIP Code to get the most online votes would host the premiere.
Ron Carter, who is spearheading the effort to restore the 95-year-old Strand Theater in Zelienople, launched a campaign to bring the premiere to the borough.
He sent e-mails to everyone in his address book and asked them to send e-mails to everyone they knew. Pleas for votes were posted on the Strand's Web site, and the Butler County Tourism and Convention Bureau and the Pittsburgh Film Office also promoted Zelienople's run for the red carpet on their Web sites.
The result of those efforts and local media coverage garnered Zelienople 10th place on the list of the most vote-getters.
The last tally on the movie's official Web site, posted last week, had the borough of 4,100 people sharing the spotlight with cities such as Tempe, population 170,000; Dallas, population 1,232,940; Philadelphia, population 1,448,394; and Austin, Texas, 709,893.
