Missing Amish girl may have been with sex offender
Sunday, April 19, 2009

A 16-year-old girl who had been sought by state police after running away from an Amish community in Jefferson County two weeks ago returned to her home last night.

Sarah D. Troyer first went to a sister's home in Smicksburg, Indiana County, before returning to her family's home near Reynoldsville. Police said she was in good condition, but they are continuing to investigate her involvement with a man who is named on the state Megan's Law Web site as a sex offender.

According to police, Fred Dilts, 52, of Aultman, Indiana County, took Sarah, her 18-year-old brother, David, and a friend to his house in a black Hyundai Elantra sedan on April 5. The friend returned home the next day, but Sarah and her brother stayed and were seen with Mr. Dilts, who is familiar with the Amish community, police said.

Trooper Shawn Compton yesterday said investigators believe Mr. Dilts was helping Sarah and her brother leave the Amish community. The trooper did not know how they met Mr. Dilts. Police have had contact with David Troyer and were questioning the sister to whom Sarah returned last night.

The trooper said he recalled several cases of Amish children leaving the community in the last two years. He said all have been found.

Mr. Dilts is listed on the state Web site as a sex offender who was convicted of rape in 1987. The site does not specify the victim's age.

According to the site, Mr. Dilts is white, 5 foot 9 inches tall, weighs 195 pounds, has blue eyes and brown hair. He has two tattoos: one on the left arm saying "Born to win" and the other on the right arm with the word "Tiger."
