Rodgers returns to Boston Marathon field

When Ryan Hall needs something to get him through the rigors of marathon training, he turns to YouTube for old clips of Bill Rodgers slogging through the streets to one of his four Boston victories.

"I've drawn a lot of inspiration from him," Hall said this week as he prepared for the 113th running of the Boston Marathon tomorrow.

Robert Cheruiyot of Kenya will seek his fifth Boston Marathon title -- fourth in a row -- when more than 25,000 runners leave Hopkinton for the 26.2-mile race to Copley Square. .

Rodgers, 61, will be on the course this year for the first time in a decade, but, with a goal of 4 hours, is no threat to win the race or even the over-60 division.

Tennis

Caroline Wozniacki advanced to the final of the Family Circle Cup in Charleston, S.C., yesterday, fighting off a furious rally by Elena Dementieva to defeat the tournament's top seed, 6-4, 5-7, 7-5.

• Rafael Nadal beat Andy Murray, 6-2, 7-6 (4), in the semifinals of the Monte Carlo Masters, putting him within one victory of his fifth consecutive title in the French Open tuneup. Nadal will play in the championship today against Novak Djokovic.

Baseball

Corey Baker threw his second complete game of the season and limited Seton Hall to just five hits as Pitt (19-13, 6-8 Big East) defeated the Pirates, 5-2, at Trees Field. Baker struck out six while running his season record to 5-2.

Figure skating

Caroline Zhang and Rachael Flatt led the United States to the World Team Trophy figure skating championship in Tokyo. Zhang, the 2007 world junior champion, finished third in the women's free skate while Flatt placed fourth to secure the win for the Americans. The United States won the three-day event with 60 points..
