HARRISBURG -- It looks like Nemacolin Woodlands in Fayette County is sticking with its decision not to seek a resort hotel casino license from the state.
"We never say anything is a 100 percent dead deal, but it's not very probable,'' Nemacolin spokesman Jeff Nobers said today.
Speculation had bubbled up last week when former state Rep. Jeff Coy, who now is a state Gaming Control Board member, moved to open up applications for the final resort hotel slots license to more than just the lone current applicant, Bushkill Group, which wants to put a resort hotel casino in the Poconos.
The first of two available resort hotel slots licenses was awarded last week to the Valley Forge Conference Center in King of Prussia.
Since Mr. Coy is a political ally of House Democratic Whip Bill DeWeese of Waynesburg, and Mr. DeWeese is an ally of Nemacolin's millionaire owner Joseph Hardy, some Republican legislators speculated that Nemacolin might be getting back into the market to become a slots resort. A few years ago, it had sought a resort hotel license but later dropped the idea.
Mr. Nobers said the building where the casino was supposed to go has now been turned into a family entertainment area called WildSide, which has bowling alleys, a climbing wall, a restaurant, a miniature train display and soon a racetrack for remote-controlled model cars.
With the Valley Forge license issued, 12 of the state's authorized 14 slots licenses have now been issued. The only two left are the other resort hotel license and a racetrack/casino license sought by Centaur Inc., which wants to build a new track and slots parlor in Lawrence County, but which doesn't have the necessary $400 million in financing yet.
