Celebrations Spotlight: Dave Sykut & Alexis Parker
Thursday, April 09, 2009

Dave Sykut says he is convinced that the start of his relationship with wife, Alexis Parker, was a big cosmic accident - in a good way.

The couple first met during karaoke night at Shootz Cafe & Billiards on the South Side. Ms. Parker, 29, an outgoing computer analyst, was new to the area. Mr. Sykut, 30, general manager of Guitar Center in Monroeville and a musician himself, was there with his best friend.

Both attended karaoke night every Thursday for months before speaking to one another.

"We were like two ships passing in the karaoke bar," said Ms. Parker.

Eventually, Ms. Parker gathered up enough courage to approach Mr. Sykut, only to be ignored.

"I don't usually talk to girls," said Mr. Sykut. "When Alexis walked away from me that night, my friend hit me in the back of the head and said, 'You're supposed to talk to the pretty girl when she talks to you."

To make up for his mistake, Mr. Sykut blew Ms. Parker a kiss after his next karaoke performance. The gesture was enough to encourage Ms. Parker to try again. This time the two talked until the bar closed and exchanged phone numbers.

Six months after their first meeting, they bought a house in Brighton Heights and worked together to restore it. Eight months later, Mr. Sykut proposed.

On Saturday, February 21 at 1 p.m., the two wed in front of 100 guests at Risen Lord Church in Brighton Heights. Wearing a gown that she designed herself, Ms. Parker glowed with excitement as she walked with her father down the aisle. Made entirely of silk, the gown's empire waist and delicate detailing reflected the wedding's vintage Victorian theme.

After the ceremony, the celebration continued at the Concordia Club in Oakland where friends and family enjoyed cocktails, dinner and dancing. In lieu of traditional wedding cake, the couple served cupcakes from Vanilla Pastry Studio in East Liberty.

The Rhythm Shakers performed at the reception, after which several friends hit the stage as part of an open mic tribute to the couple. Local musician Cathasaigh sang a song that she had written for them, and best man, Tyler Stacy, performed with his band.

From the music to the marriage vows, the couple's wedding coordinator and friend, Penny Lambright, said the entire wedding accurately reflected the bride and groom.

"It was a perfect picture of Dave and Alexis," she said. "They really took the day and made it their own."
