Pittsburgh City Council convened a brief meeting today to honor the three officers slain Saturday in Stanton Heights, and issued a proclamation declaring officers Stephen J. Mayhle, Paul J. Sciullo II and Eric Kelly to be "Heroes of the City of Pittsburgh."
Council has canceled all other business this week. On Thursday, all non-essential city employees will be off work in honor of the officers. Trash collection, though, will be on a normal schedule all week.
In addition, the Civil Division of Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas will be closed beginning at noon tomorrow and all day Thursday because of the visitation for the officers in the City-County Building. All other divisions of the court, magisterial
district judges' offices and the Pittsburgh Municipal Court will be open on Wednesday and Thursday.
Council's proclamation:
WHEREAS, on the morning of Saturday, April 4, 2009, Pittsburgh Police Officers Stephen J. Mayhle, Paul J. Sciullo II and Eric Kelly responded to a call for assistance due to a domestic disturbance in the Stanton Heights neighborhood of the City of Pittsburgh, performing their sworn duties to faithfully protect and serve those in need; and,
WHEREAS, at the scene of the call for help, a senseless and unwarranted attack was unleashed upon them resulting in their tragic deaths and instantly taking from our community three dedicated public servants, devoted sons, loving husbands and caring fathers, and,
WHEREAS, as the people of the City of Pittsburgh now grieve for the loss of Stephen, Eric and Paul, we weep for those who have been so cruelly taken from their loved ones as we pray for the well-being and healing of their families, offering them comfort, support and heartfelt tributes, both public and private; and,
WHEREAS, the fraternity of police from around the nation and world join City of Pittsburgh Police in mourning the loss of these fallen heroes, all members of that special and unique family of law enforcement officers.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh, on behalf of all of the People of Pittsburgh, do hereby convey our most sincere condolences and prayers to the families of Pittsburgh Police Officer Stephen J. Mayhle, Pittsburgh Police Officer Paul J. Sciullo II and Pittsburgh Police Officer Eric Kelly, who will be missed by a grateful and broken-hearted city.
