Woman, ex-husband remain hospitalized after Pine standoff
Tuesday, April 07, 2009

A woman who police say shot her ex-husband several times remains hospitalized herself with a bullet wound.

Northern Regional police had taken Lynne Agnew, 46, of Shadyside, into custody Sunday night following a three-hour standoff at the home in Pine where she once lived.

Her ex-husband, Dr. Daniel Kelly Agnew, 43, is being treated for multiple gunshot wounds.

Police say that at about 5:30 p.m., Ms. Agnew confronted and shot Dr. Agnew outside the home on Salem Heights Drive.

By the time police arrived at the house, Ms. Agnew was inside, and she refused to communicate with officers for the next two hours.

Around 7:30 p.m., police and reporters heard a blast from inside the house that could have been a gunshot. Around that same time, SWAT teams from the Northern Regional and Allegheny Country police departments arrived at the scene.

Ms. Agnew gave herself up shortly before 9 p.m., Northern Regional Chief Bob Amann said. Allegheny County police are investigating whether her chest wound was self-inflicted.

Ms. Agnew and Dr. Agnew were taken separately to UPMC Passavant Hospital in McCandless. Both have since been transferred to other medical facilities. Citing privacy rules, a hospital representative declined to provide any information on their locations or conditions. Dr. Agnew is an orthopaedic surgeon at Passavant.

They are the parents of two teenage children. Neither child was in the Pine home at the time of the incident. Chief Amann said police moved cautiously Sunday night from concerns that the children might have been inside the house.

During the evening, police determined that both children were at Ms. Agnew's residence in Shadyside

Chief Amann said police had been called to Agnew home on other occasions following domestic disputes.

Dr. Kelly Agnew, who goes by his middle name, filed for divorce on Feb. 14, 2008. Since the divorce, Dr. Agnew continued to live in the house, while Ms. Agnew resided in Shadyside.

Both grew up in Keyser, W.Va., a town of about 5,000 on the West Virginia-Maryland border. It is about 135 miles southeast of Pittsburgh.
