Your daily first look at March Madness and those that make it mad
(all games on ESPN)
7 p.m.: Louisville (33-4) vs. Oklahoma (32-4).
9:30 p.m.: Stanford (33-4) vs. Connecticut (37-0).
THE FINAL TWO: It will be surprising Michigan State against North Carolina in tomorrow night's national championship game. The Big Ten champion Spartans ran and rebounded with Connecticut in defeating the Huskies, 82-73, behind 21 points from Kalin Lucas. In the nightcap, the Tar Heels ran away from Villanova, 83-69, behind 22 points from Ty Lawson and 20 from Wayne Ellington. â-- Coverage, Page C-3.
A MAGIC DUSTING: If you're looking for an edge in tomorrow's game not found on the stat sheet, how about this: Magic Johnson and Larry Bird will present the game ball before tipoff at Ford Field. Thirty years ago, they dueled for the national title in a game that elevated college basketball toward the madness it has become. And, oh yeah, Johnson led Michigan State to the title that night.
DRIBBLE DRIVE: CBS long ago popularized the expression "road to the Final Four." But the fact of the matter is that Michigan State is the only one of the four teams playing in Detroit that actually hit the road. Why fly when the games are in your back yard? Distances each of the schools traveled to get to Detroit:
School, Miles
Connecticut 746
North Carolina 701
Villanova 572
Michigan State 90
20 Consecutive seasons that North Carolina coach Roy Williams, above, has won at least one NCAA tournament game -- the longest such streak in NCAA history.
