A mother and her boyfriend gave the woman's 13-year-old daughter rum and drugs so the mother's boyfriend could try to get her pregnant, police in Uniontown said.
The adults were charged March 16 in connection with a plot to impregnate the girl because they wanted a baby and the mother is infertile.
Uniontown police Detective Donald Gmitter could not be reached for comment but told the Associated Press, "There's some sick people on this case."
According to an affidavit, the couple decided to drug the girl so the man could rape her.
Part of the evidence includes a cell phone text message from the man to his girlfriend that says in part "u need 2 give her more pills" and "i wount this done and over with don't u so let's get this rite."
The Post-Gazette does not identify the victims of sex crimes.
Police said the plot was hatched in December when the woman asked the girl if she would have the man's baby. In exchange, the girl could marry him. The teenager refused and told her father about the proposal.
After the rejection, the couple apparently decided to put the next phase of the plan into action. About a month ago, according to the affidavit, the girl and her mother went to the man's residence.
When the mother left to get pizza, the man made sexual advances but the girl kicked him away. She later told her father, who confronted her mother. The woman denied the allegations.
About three weeks ago, the affidavit says, the girl was at her home when, she believes, her mother spiked her Pepsi with Calico Jack rum. After she drank the Pepsi, she said she got sick and passed out.
When she woke up, she said, one of her legs was out of her jeans and the man was in the room with her. She again told her father and her mother again denied the accusation.
The last incident happened about a week ago when she came home from school because she wasn't feeling well. She said her mother insisted she drink warm tea, which police believe was spiked with Tylenol PM, a pain reliever and sleep aid.
She fell asleep but awoke to find the man pulling a blanket off of her.
When he tried to fondle her, she said, she slapped his hands away and left the room. She said she noticed a powdery substance on the roof of her mouth.
Police said they found a receipt for the tea at the house. A search of the woman's trash also turned up an empty Calico Jack bottle and a pill cutter with white powder residue on the blade.
The woman, charged with endangering the welfare of a child, turned herself in yesterday. The man was charged with attempted rape and jailed.
Correction/clarification (published April 3, 2009) -- The couple was accused of attempted rape. The headline on the original version of this story had an incorrect criminal charge.
