• Cornell High School students John Groom and Ian Miller represented their band Feb. 12-14 in the West Virginia University Invitational High School Honors Band.

• West Allegheny High School junior Alexis Valenti, who is enrolled in the health assistant program, was a recent student of the month for the morning session at Parkway West Career and Technology Center in North Fayette. Alexis had a 4.0 grade-point average at Parkway West and a 3.2 grade-point average at West Allegheny.

• Bon Meade Elementary School fifth-graders Chelsea Roscart and Jordan Thomas received the Moon Area School District's Tiger Spirit Award Feb. 9. They were selected by their teachers for helpfulness and cheerful and determined attitudes.

• West Allegheny High School senior Zachery Ross, who is enrolled in the auto body repair program at Parkway West Career and Technology Center in North Fayette, was a recent student of the month for the afternoon session. He had a 4.0 grade-point average in his programs at both Parkway and West Allegheny.

• A quartet of vocalists from Moon Area High School was chosen for the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association Region I Choral Festival: senior Keith Petersen, bass II; senior Marissa Zane, soprano I; junior Alex Belohlavek, bass I; and sophomore Kim Padovani, alto II.

• Chartiers Valley High School seniors Katie Leis, Brenna Black and Benjamin Cooley were selected for the recent Pennsylvania Music Educators Association District One West Band Festival. They were among 135 students from 46 school districts.

• Spanish essays by Cornell High School seniors Madlyn Ponticel and Karissa Liberatore are beingpublished in the April issue of the Pennsylvania Modern Language Association's Journal, The Forum.

• Junior Eleanor Aban, a Moon Area High School violist, qualified for the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association Western Region Orchestra last month at McDowell High School in Erie.

• These Chartiers Valley High School students performed in the Western Allegheny County Area Honors Band: Sammi Berton, Katie Leis, John Kearney, Allie Leis, Justin Kinslow, Jordan Sanders, Benjamin Cooley, Leslie Chabala, Brenna Black, Joelle Salerno, Denielle Wauthier, Gina Riccardi, Elizabeth Kletzli, Stephen Wisneski and Molly Oelschlager.

• Jeffrey Yeh, a Carlynton High School senior, and his brother, Brendan, a freshman, performed with the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony Orchestra in a free concert in February in Heinz Hall. Both play violin for the symphony orchestra and the high school orchestra. Jeffrey is a three-year veteran of the symphony orchestra; Brendan is in his first year.

• Moon Area High School senior Shane Emrich was selected to play tuba at the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association regional band festival March 4-6 at Ambridge Area High School.
