The Deer Lakes boys soccer team is hosting three events over the weekend that will benefit West Deer Food Bank.
A soccer tournament for local high school teams will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, and a spring training camp for the Deer Lakes recreational soccer league will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday.
The Riverhounds professional soccer team will meet the Slippery Rock University soccer team at Deer Lakes High School stadium at 7 p.m. Monday. The Riverhounds will sign autographs after the game and tickets for a drawing for Riverhound and Slippery Rock gear will be available.
Admission to all events is free, but bring a nonperishable food item or cash for The West Deer Food Bank.
North Hills Junior High School Assistant Principal Beth Williams has been promoted to principal of Highcliff Elementary School. She began work Tuesday.
Mrs. Williams joined North Hills School District as an assistant principal in July 2006. Before then, she was a high school social studies teacher in Avonworth School District for nine years.
Mrs. Williams completed the principal's certification program at Point Park University. She has a master's degree from Duquesne University and a bachelor's degree from Grove City College.
A resident of Ben Avon, Mrs. Williams and her husband, Doug, have two daughters, Megan, age 9, and Haley, age 6.
She replaces Dr. Darlene Tartaglione, who recently accepted a similar position with the Avonworth School District.
The 200-student Highcliff is slated for renovation and expansion.
Pine-Richland High School students are hosting a symposium to engage students from different disciplines in a discourse about the topic "Democratic Learning in the Twenty-First Century.
It will take place from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday.
More than 200 students will participate and have prepared by reading influential leaders, philosophers and authors including John Dewey, Dan Pink and Gary Marx.
Keynote speakers will be state Senator Jane Orie, R-McCandless, and Congressman Jason Altmire, D-McCandless.
Pine-Richland Middle School has earned the Highmark Healthy High 5 School Challenge grant of $9,117 to implement a nutritional and fitness program.
The middle school will use the money to support fitness equipment and nutritional materials for the Middle School Wellness Challenge in grades seven and eight.
"The goal of this program is to provide both educational resources about the importance of making healthy nutritional choices and opportunities for additional fitness activities," said teacher John Haddad, who applied for the grant.
Pine-Richland High School will be host to the high school spring orchestra concert at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the high school. The high school is located at 700 Warrendale Road.
Pine-Richland Middle School will host a middle school spring orchestra concert April 21. It will begin at 7 p.m. at the high school.
