Oakwood man admits guilt in 2001 drowning
Wednesday, April 01, 2009

An Oakwood man pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter this morning for the 2001 drowning of a Carnegie man.

Michael Clawson, 34, agreed to testify against co-defendant James Swiech in the killing of 24-year-old Michael Morgan, who was found in the Ohio River near West Carson Street in August 2001.

Mr. Clawson was arrested in 2006 after an investigation by the Pittsburgh police cold case squad. According to a criminal complaint, an unnamed witness told police that Mr. Clawson and Mr. Swiech gave Mr. Morgan a toxic dose of drugs and smothered him before tossing him into the Ohio. The witness told police the two men feared Mr. Morgan would snitch on them about another crime.

The Allegheny County Medical Examiner ruled that Mr. Morgan was still alive when he entered the river and he drowned.

Mr. Clawson will be sentenced after he testifies against Mr. Swiech, 36, as a condition of his plea agreement with prosecutors.
