Pirates cut eight, tab Karstens as starter
Wednesday, April 01, 2009

BRADENTON, Fla. -- The Pirates this morning came close to finalizing their 25-man roster by cutting eight players -- starter Virgil Vasquez, relievers Chris Bootcheck, Denny Bautista and Jason Davis, outfielder Jeff Salazar and infielders Andy Phillips and Garrett Jones, and catcher Erik Kratz -- and naming Jeff Karstens to the rotation.

The spring roster is at 27 but, with starter Phil Dumatrait headed to the 15-day disabled list, only one extra active player remains in camp.

Outfielder Craig Monroe was just told he "pretty much" made the team -- his words -- pending another possible that could happen today. Monroe's escape clause kicks in today. General manager Neal Huntington said Monroe's situation will be resolved after the game this afternoon.

Infielder Luis Cruz was told he made the team.

Basically, that means one relief spot is all that remains to be determined. Those not yet told they have made it are Sean Burnett, Evan Meek, Craig Hansen, Donnie Veal and Jesse Chavez.
