The Steelers and Arizona will conduct a Super Bowl XLIII rematch of sorts when they open the exhibition season at 8 p.m. Aug. 13 at Heinz Field.
Some of the players from each team have moved on since the Steelers beat the Cardinals, 27-23, Feb. 1 in Tampa, Fla. In fact, Bryant McFadden, the Steelers' starting left cornerback in that game, will likely start for Arizona Aug. 13 after he signed a two-year, $10 million contract with the Cardinals as a free agent this month.
He joined a group of former Steelers players and coaches who fled to Arizona in 2007, when Ken Whisenhunt became their head coach.
As enticing a matchup as that looks on paper, typically coaches play their first teams no longer than the first quarter of the first exhibition game.
The second exhibition game in Heinz Field against Buffalo holds more promise because it will be played at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 29. Typically in that game, coaches play their first teams for nearly three quarters. That game will feature new Bills receiver Terrell Owens, who last visited Heinz Field Dec. 7 with the Cowboys, 20-13 losers to the Steelers.
The Steelers' two road games in the preseason are Aug. 20-24 at Washington and Sept. 3 or 4 at Carolina, with those specific dates and times to be determined.
The NFL announced its entire preseason schedule yesterday, but has not yet revealed the actual days or times for most games.
The final three Steelers games will be shown on KDKA and FSN Pittsburgh.
The Cardinals will visit Pittsburgh for an exhibition game for the first time since at least 1965.
