Saturday, March 28, 2009

One man died and his passenger was hurt in a one-vehicle accident early today along Interstate 79 in Robinson.

State police said Edward William Smith, 26, and Rochelle Corinne Smith, 25, were in a vehicle operated by Mr. Smith at 1:20 a.m. that entered the interstate southbound at the Crafton entrance. The vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed when, for unknown reasons, Mr. Smith lost control, police said.

The car traveled through the grass center median and crossed Interstate 79 northbound and came to rest in a field to the east of the interstate.

Mr. Smith, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the vehicle. He was transported by helicopter to Allegheny General Hospital for treatment of injuries to his head and torso; he was pronounced dead tonight.

Ms. Smith, who was wearing a seatbelt, had to be extricated from the car and was taken to AGH by ambulance with injuries to her left leg. She was listed in stable condition.
