Fishing Report: 3/27/09

Lake Erie: The steelhead tributaries were low but had a little color yesterday. Angling was slow, with activity mostly in lower Elk Creek and scattered on much of Walnut Creek. In Presque Isle Bay, some crappies and perch were reported off the marinas and the north and south piers. Jeremy Scott of Erie caught a 1-pound 9-ounce, 141/2-inch perch March 15 on a white Trout Magnet jig tipped with two grubs under a weighted float.

Buffalo Creek (Armstrong County): Anglers were releasing trout stocked March 14 on nymphs and spinners.

Crooked Creek Lake (Armstrong County): The crappie bite was expected to pick up with warming temperatures. One angler released a 4-pound bass in recent days.

Lake Wilhelm (Mercer County): Bluegills, crappies and a few perch were hitting in "the stumps," and around Launch 3 and the dam.

Pymatuning Lake (Crawford County): Crappies were reported in the shallow bays and expected to turn on more as water warms. Walleyes were beginning to hit in the spillway. Fred Brittner and Ben Fleet of Butler landed walleyes up to 8 pounds from shore over the past week.

Cascade Quarry, Tionesta Creek (Lawrence County): These trout-stocked fisheries are open to all-tackle angling year-round, but are catch-and-release until opening day of trout season April 18.

Lake Arthur (Butler County): Les Passarelli of Saxonburg caught a 1-pound 8-ounce, 123/4-inch crappie and a 1-pound 5-ounce, 123/4-inch perch March 23. Channel catfish, including a 12- and a 13-pounder, and a couple of bass also were reported.

Glade Run Lake (Butler County): Nice catches of crappies were reported along with trout in recent days.

Raccoon Lake (Beaver County): Nice numbers of panfish were reported.

Deer, Bull creeks (Allegheny County): Nice catches of trout were reported on olive or white Wooly Buggers and on Trout Magnets in the Delayed Harvest sections.

North Park Lake (Allegheny County): Trout were biting in recent days, with some anglers releasing a couple of dozen in a day.

Allegheny River: Average releases of walleyes, saugers and a couple of smallmouth bass were reported in slightly high flow in recent days. Darrell Woodrow of Shaler Township released a 29-inch walleye around Sharpsburg Tuesday. In Armstrong County, river guide Jeff Knapp of Kittanning released 10 smallmouths, 16 to 19 inches, and a 30-plus inch muskie.

Ohio River: Angling picked up in good conditions with a mixed bag of average-size walleyes, saugers and catfish released in recent days. An angler released a 45-inch, 32-pound muskie.

Monongahela River: Anglers were releasing legal-size walleyes, nice-size saugers and perch up to 12 inches around Gray's Landing lock and dam. An angler reported catching a 26-inch walleye and a 38-inch muskie before walleye season closed.

South Fork Tenmile Creek (Greene County): Smallmouth bass and trout were reported at the falls below the mouth of Brown's Creek in Waynesburg.

Wisecarver, Majorsville dams (Greene County): Crappie action picked up on waxworms and small jigs as well as floats and maggots this week.

Quemahoning Reservoir (Somerset County): Crappies, including a 14-incher, were reported on jigs and minnows. Northern pike were hitting on shiners.

Laurel Hill Creek (Somerset County): The Delayed Harvest section was producing for fly anglers in recent days. Hatches included stoneflies and caddisflies.

Loyalhanna Lake (Westmoreland County): Anglers were catching crappies, mostly in small sizes (about 8 inches) this week.

Loyalhanna Creek (Westmoreland County): The Delayed Harvest section was yielding nice releases of brown and rainbow trout, with a couple of trophy browns in the mix.

Conemaugh River (Cambria County): A few legal-size northern pike were reported amid light fishing pressure.
