Two members of Britney Spears' stage crew were jailed after an early morning brawl on the South Side yesterday, the eve of her "Circus" comeback tour concert at Mellon Arena.
Rockey Lee Dickey Jr., 34, of Manhattan Beach, Calif., and Alex Montes, 23, of Valencia, Calif., were charged with aggravated assault, disorderly conduct, simple assault and public drunkenness in the scuffle, which police say unraveled just before 1 a.m. when officers spotted Mr. Dickey striking another man in the 1700 block of East Carson Street.
When police tried to stop him, Mr. Dickey turned and swung at an officer, grazing his head and knocking off his hat. Mr. Montes tried to intervene in the fight by assaulting another officer and placing him in a headlock, police said.
Mr. Dickey repeatedly resisted arrest, police said, and was subdued only with their use of a Taser. Mr. Montes ran from the scene, but officers later found him at 17th Street and Wrights Way.
Police said they didn't know what sparked the skirmish but noted that additional charges against the pair are possible.
"Both actors had very strong odors of alcohol, slurred speech and bloodshot eyes," police wrote in a statement.
Mr. Dickey was taken to UPMC South Side before he went to jail. The 30-year-old man he is charged with assaulting was treated at UPMC Mercy for injuries to his nose and forehead. Neither officer was hurt.
Both men were jailed on $100,000 straight bond, which they posted yesterday. A post on Ms. Spears' official Web site said the men had been "dismissed by their employer" after the incident. The site said they were part of a "company contracted to provide equipment" for "Circus" but they weren't Ms. Spears' employees.
Ms. Spears performs at 8 tonight at Mellon Arena.
