Keith Jones, co-anchor of the KDKA morning news since 2005, has accepted a new job at WTSP-TV in Tampa, Fla., and will do his last local broadcast on April 3.
He informed KDKA general manager Christopher Pike of his decision on Tuesday. Pike said yesterday he didn't know yet who would replace the departing anchor, who shares the desk with Sonni Abatta.
"I enjoyed my time here," Jones said yesterday. "My family and I adore Pittsburgh and are sad to leave, but the economic environment we're in indicated it was time to move on. I'm incredibly blessed to have had a couple of job offers."
A former weekend anchor/reporter for WPXI-TV, Jones worked at WOWK-TV Charleston/Huntington, W.Va., for two years before returning to Pittsburgh and KDKA. He said his family wanted to be near Pittsburgh's medical facilities because of his daughter's rare heart disease.
During his time in Pittsburgh, Jones has been an active volunteer for the American Heart Association, Children's Miracle Network and Children's Hospital.
In 2006 he was off the air for two month with injuries after drinking and driving. Upon his return, he apologized on-air to viewers, saying he hoped to win back their trust.
