Jail cell, Homestead Borough

Jail cells at the old Homestead Municipal Building held countless thieves and drunks and no doubt a few who were wrongly accused. But the most famous person incarcerated at the building was probably Mother Jones, the silver-haired labor activist once described as the most dangerous woman in America. Mother Jones came to the Monongahela Valley 90 years ago to rally support for what would become known as the Steel Strike of 1919. In Homestead, she was arrested for "street speaking without a permit." (Scroll down to read more about Mother Jones' arrest and see another view.)
