PIAA Basketball Championships: Guilfoyle girls win Class A crown
Archbishop Carroll, Penn Wood take titles

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Whoever coined the phrase "defense wins championships" must have had the Bishop Guilfoyle girls' basketball team in mind.

One game after limiting WPIAL champion North Catholic to a season-low 23 points, the Marauders stifled District 11 winner Pottsville Nativity BVM, 49-27, at Penn State University's Bryce Jordan Center to earn their second PIAA Class A title in three seasons and fifth overall.

The 27 points were the lowest in a PIAA championship game -- boys or girls -- since 1994, when North Catholic beat Bishop Hoban, 61-22, in a Class AAA girls' game.

In five PIAA playoff games, the District 6 champion Marauders (30-1) gave up just 148 points (29.6 per game).

"We hoped we could defend that well against them, so to see our girls go out and do it was great to see," Bishop Guilfoyle coach Mark Moschella said.

The Marauders held Nativity BVM (27-4) to 20 percent shooting (10 of 50), including 14 percent (4 of 27) in the first half. No Golden Girls player scored more than eight points.

Forward Alli Williams finished with 22 points on 8-of-12 shooting and pulled in 12 rebounds for the Marauders, who used an early 13-0 run to take a commanding 22-5 lead less than a minute into the second quarter.

Class AAA girls'

For the second consecutive night, a nationally ranked girls' team played for a title. But unlike Friday, the highly touted squad won.

Archbishop Carroll came out on fire and didn't cool down, using a stellar shooting performance to defeat Lampeter-Strasburg, 68-45, in the Class AAA girls' final.

In the first half, the Patriots shot a torrid 65 percent (17 of 26) and connected on seven 3-pointers to raced to a 45-19 lead. For the game, they shot 48 percent and hit 10 3-pointers.

"When we came out of the locker room, I thought we'd play like we played," said Archbishop Carroll coach Chuck Creighton. "What happened tonight wasn't a fluke. That's just how we shoot. Nothing like that surprises me."

Archbishop Carroll (30-1), the District 12 champion, was the second nationally ranked team to play the past two nights. The Patriots are ranked No. 5 nationally by ESPN Rise. Cardinal O'Hara, which Mt. Lebanon defeated Friday, is ranked No. 6 by ESPN Rise and No. 5 by USA Today.

Class AAAA boys'

Leading wire-to-wire, Penn Wood captured its first PIAA title by rolling past York, 72-53, in the Class AAAA boys' final.

Penn Wood, the runner-up in District 1, jumped to a 19-4 first-quarter lead and extended the margin to as much as 24 in the fourth quarter.

Duane Johnson and Aaron Brown led the Patriots (28-4) with 20 points apiece. Jevaughn Murphy led the Bearcats (31-2) with 17 points.
