Spring Synopsis: Moss hopes to play today
Updates, news and notes from Bradenton
Friday, March 20, 2009

Injury report: Brandon Moss (wrist) played in a minor-league game at Pirate City yesterday in hopes of returning to the lineup today against Boston, his first such appearance since March 7. Eric Hinske (rib cage) returns to the Isle of Palms Park where the extent of his Feb. 26 injury first fully revealed itself the next day in batting practice to be too difficult to manage. He went 0 for 2 with a walk Wednesday in his return game but added, "There will be plenty of at-bats for me before the season starts." No timetable yet for Andy Phillips (back), absent since March 8.

Today: Jeff Karstens is scheduled to replace Tom Gorzelanny, who was demoted Wednesday, as the starter vs. Boston's Clay Buchholz at 1:05 p.m. in Fort Myers.

Camp roster: 40, with 18 pitchers, 4 catchers, 10 infielders and 8 outfielders.

Competition: Ross Ohlendorf, the almost-but-not-yet-official No. 4 starter behind Paul Maholm, Ian Snell and Zach Duke, stayed on schedule at Pirate City yesterday with 42/3 innings, 5 runs, 4 earned runs, 1 walk and 4 strikeouts against Philadephia's Class AAA club. Moss went 4 for 5 with a double and a walk.

Fun under the sun: Make that, golf under the sun. Or whatever family activities the players chose on their second of three off days this spring, thanks to the World Baseball Classic extending the spring training schedule.

Meet me in St. Louis: 18 days until the opener.
