Scouting Report: PIAA Boys' Basketball Semifinals
Tuesday, March 17, 2009
BOYS' CLASS AAAA

The games: Penn Wood (26-4) vs. Mt. Lebanon (24-5), 7 p.m. tomorrow, Big Spring High School, Newville; Plymouth-Whitemarsh (25-5) vs. York (31-1), 7:30 p.m. tomorrow, Geigle Complex, Reading.

The skinny: Mt. Lebanon is a underdog because just about no one gives a team from the West much of a chance to get to the championship. Penn Wood, near Philadelphia, is the No. 2 team from District 1. Mt. Lebanon must overcome a size disadvantage. Penn Wood starts four players 6 feet 5 or taller. In the quarterfinals, Penn Wood held Pennsbury star Dalton Pepper to 15 points. He averaged well over 20. Pepper, by the way, finished his career with 2,207 points, 11th best in southeastern Pennsylvania history, one better than Wilt Chamberlain. ... Plymouth-Whitemarsh is led by 6-9 forward C.J. Aiken, who had nine blocked shots in the quarterfinals against Williamsport. York came back from a 14-point deficit against Parkland in the quarterfinals and 17 down against Reading in the district playoffs. Malik Generett had 10 points and 15 rebounds for York in the PIAA quarterfinals. A 6-4, 200-pound senior, Generett is a University of Connecticut football recruit.

Predicted winners: Penn Wood and Plymouth-Whitemarsh.

BOYS' CLASS AAA

The games: Hampton (25-4) vs. Greensburg Salem (22-5), 7 p.m. today, Gateway High School; York Suburban (27-3) vs. Archbishop Carroll (25-3), 7:30 p.m. today, Geigle Complex, Reading.

The skinny: This is Greensburg Salem's first time in the PIAA semifinals. This is only the second semifinal appearance for Hampton. The previous time was 1984 when two of Hampton's top players were brothers Brian and Jerry Shanahan. The Shanahans, coincidentally, are uncles to Bill Luther, one of Hampton's top players. ... These two teams met in the WPIAL quarterfinals and Hampton won in overtime, 52-49. Greensburg Salem's Chris Klimchock, who has made two winning shots in the Lions' past two games, had a chance to win it in regulation, but his shot was blocked by Luther. Hampton has a size advantage with 6-7 Luther and 6-7 Tim Donegan. Klimchock and Hampton's Matt Madia make for a good guard matchup. ... Archbishop Carroll upset Neumann-Goretti, 70-65, in the quarterfinals. Neumann-Goretti was ranked No. 1 in the state and in the top 25 in at least one national poll. One of Archbishop Carroll's top players is sophomore guard Juan'ya Green, but junior point guard D.J. Irving had 26 points against Neumann-Goretti. Senior guard Mitch Kemp leads York Suburban in scoring at 15 ppg.

Predicted winners: Hampton and Archbishop Carroll.

BOYS' CLASS AA

The games: North Catholic (27-2) vs. Washington (25-3), 7 p.m. tomorrow, Hempfield High School; Imhotep Charter (30-1) vs. Hughesville (23-5), 7 p.m. tomorrow, East Pennsboro.

The skinny: North Catholic is the WPIAL champion and Washington the No. 8 team from the WPIAL. The teams are similar in that neither has a big star. Both are balanced on offense. Senior Nick Bryant averages 16 for Washington while Jesse Long averages 15.9 for North Catholic. Henry Pwono, a 6-5 senior, could be the key player for North Catholic. Washington might have to prove it can shoot from the outside if North Catholic plays its 1-2-2 matchup zone. ... Imhotep Charter, a Philadelphia Public League school, has to be the favorite. It was the No. 1 Class AA team in the state in the most recent Harrisburg Patriot-News rankings and is in the semifinals for the third consecutive season. Point guard Parrish Grant is one of the team's top players and transferred from Prep Charter last spring. Grant had 16 points against his old team (Prep Charter) in Saturday's quarterfinals. Hughesville, a District 4 team from Lycoming County, is led by 6-3 senior guard Rezin Davis. He is the school's all-time leading scorer and had seven 3-pointers in the quarterfinals against Trinity.

Predicted winners: Washington and Imhotep Charter.

BOYS' CLASS A

The games: Kennedy Catholic (25-2) vs. Elk County Catholic (23-7), 6:30 p.m. today, Clarion University; Girard College (24-5) vs. Scotland School (21-6), 6 p.m. today, Geigle Complex, Reading.

The skinny: Kennedy Catholic senior guard Kyle Randall (25 ppg) has scored 1,960 career points. Harvard and Cleveland State are two of the schools recruiting him. Harvard coach Tommy Ammaker attended the quarterfinal game against Sewickley Academy. Kennedy Catholic coach Marlon McGaughy said Arizona State might offer a scholarship to Randall, but it's questionable if Randall can play at that level. Elk County Catholic coach Aaron Straub is in his 27th season and has 604 wins. ... Girard College point guard John Johnson is only a sophomore, but already has 1,000 career points. He has averaged 20 points as a freshman and sophomore. Scotland School has won four PIAA titles since 1994, but the school might close after this year.

Predicted winners: Elk County Catholic and Girard College.
