Dapper Dan Wrestling Classic: West Virginia back for first time since 1978
Sunday, March 15, 2009

The Dapper Dan Wrestling Classic will probably be the wrestling swan song for Carlynton High School's Jordan Roussos.

"I have a full ride to Bowling Green to play football," he said. "So this is most likely the last match in my wrestling career. Wrestling in the Dapper Dan Wrestling Classic is an incredible way to have it end."

Roussos will anchor the WPIAL All-Star team in the 285-pound weight class when it faces a West Virginia All-Star team for the first time since 1978 at 2 p.m. in the preliminary match. At 4 p.m., the United States All-Stars meet the Pennsylvania All-Stars in the main attraction.

"I've never been to The Classic before, but I've heard quite a bit about it," Roussos said. "I once saw a video of Kurt Angle wrestling in The Classic. Ever since then, I've wanted to wrestle in it."

Roussos is the first Carlynton wrestler since 1973 to win a PIAA Class AA title. He had hoped to be picked for the Pennsylvania team, but Clearfield's Sean Owen, a two-time PIAA Class AAA finalist and one-time champion, was the choice.

"I'm just thrilled to be picked on either team," said Roussos, who will face Gabriel Hardiman (75-23), the West Virginia champion from Cabell Midland High School.

The West Virginia All-Stars have combined to win 18 state titles and have a cumulative record of 1,947-343.

"West Virginia has a very strong senior class this year," West Virginia co-coach Larry Shaw said. "Our kids will be self-motivated to battle the WPIAL All-Stars and represent West Virginia."

West Virginia features two three-time state champions, Dirk Bauer and Cameron Gallaher.

Bauer (175-3) is from Wheeling Park High School. His opponent in the 112-pound bout is Canon-McMillan's Ron Schram (107-29), a three-time WPIAL Class AAA qualifier.

Gallaher (175-3) is from Grafton High. His opponent at 189 is Shady Side Academy's Roman SanDoval (154-26), a two-time WPIAL Class AA champion and one-time PIAA champion.

Bauer is one of two West Virginia All-Stars from Wheeling Park. The other is Nick Taylor (134-44), a 2009 champion at 125 pounds. He will face Latrobe's Nathan Pennesi (140-26), a PIAA Class AAA runner-up.

East Fairmont High School has three entries on the West Virginia team -- Drew Jenkins, Eric Morris and Mason Bailey.

Jenkins (185-21) is a 2009 West Virginia champion entered at 130 pounds. His opponent is Mount Pleasant's Colin Sheridan (140-46), a WPIAL Class AA runner-up.

Morris (178-26) is a two-time West Virginia champion. His opponent in the 152-pound bout is Avella's Kyle Appleby (122-3), a two-time WPIAL Class AA finalist and one-time champion.

Bailey (177-16) is also a two-time West Virginia champion. His opponent at 160 pounds is West Mifflin's James Fleming (131-14), a three-time WPIAL Class AAA champion and four-time PIAA place-winner.

The other six members of the WPIAL All-Stars are Connellsville's Jake Swink, Avella's Mitch Spencer, Hempfield's Jack Bachman, Penn-Trafford's Devan Jones, Beth-Center's Cody Catalina and Burgettstown's Ryan Watson.

Swink (111-42) placed third in the WPIAL in Class AAA at 125 pounds, but is dropping to 119 for The Classic, with a 5-pound weight allowance. His opponent is Ryan Ashbury (137-25), a 2009 West Virginia champion from Oak Glen High School.

Spencer (139-28) is a two-time WPIAL Class AA champion and two-time PIAA place-winner who competed at 135 this season. His opponent is John King (143-12), a two-time West Virginia champion from Philip Barbour High School.

Bachman (161-35) is a two-time WPIAL Class AAA finalist and one-time champion. His opponent at 140 is Victor Panico (130-39), who attends University School.

Jones (108-55) is a WPIAL Class AAA runner-up at 145 pounds. He will face Andy Church (151-45) of Parkersburg South High School.

Catalina (79-39) won a WPIAL Class AA title at 171 and placed fifth in the PIAA. His opponent is Jacob Dempsey (146-33), a 2009 West Virginia champion from Huntington High School.
