Major League Notebook: Ex-Yankee Williams accused of striking woman in nightclub
Saturday, March 14, 2009

A woman filed a complaint against former New York Yankees center fielder Bernie Williams for allegedly hitting her at a nightclub while she took his picture.

Officer Angel Nazario said the woman claimed Williams snatched the camera, damaged it and hit her in the face. The incident allegedly happened around 2:30 a.m. Thursday at a San Juan, Puerto Rico, nightclub, hours after Williams and his Puerto Rican teammates beat the Netherlands, 5-0, in the World Baseball Classic.

Williams denies any wrongdoing, according to his spokesman, Steve Fortunato. Police are investigating.

"It's unfortunate," Williams said yesterday in Miami before a Puerto Rican team workout. "It's a misunderstanding. ... There is a part of me that wants to go out there and say, obviously, my side of the facts. But I think I will let the process take its course. I do want to say this: That there are some reports that are represented in the media that are inaccurate. Hopefully, the matter will be clarified sooner or later, and the truth will come out."

Puerto Rico plays the United States in the WBC tonight in Miami. Puerto Rican manager Jose Oquendo said he talked with Williams about the matter.

Marlins

Outfielder Jay Gibbons was released by Florida, a setback in his bid to revive his career after admitting he used human growth hormone. The Marlins made the move even though Gibbons hit .313 (5 for 16) this spring training with a homer and seven RBIs. Manager Fredi Gonzalez said the team had no room on the roster for Gibbons. Gibbons was named in the Mitchell Report in December 2007 and hasn't played in the major leagues since.

Yankees

Second baseman Robinson Cano and reliever Damaso Marte are scheduled to be examined by doctors today and won't immediately play after rejoining New York following the World Baseball Classic. Cano has tightness in the back of his right shoulder. He has felt it all spring training but didn't think it was serious. Cano didn't tell the Yankees about the tightness, which he feels at times when extending his right arm on a throw, before leaving for the WBC. There is no discomfort when he hits. Marte has tightness in the left side of his chest, which he thinks stems from weightlifting. He hopes to only miss three or four days.

Athletics

The Athletics are rebuffing Oakland's efforts to propose a ballpark that would keep the team in the city. In a statement, owner Lew Wolff said the A's had "fully exhausted" stadium discussions with the city and had no interest in going over "old ground." Wolff's statement came a day after Oakland city officials asked baseball commissioner Bud Selig for help with developing a new stadium after the A's recently scrapped plans to move to Fremont.

Phillies

Pat Burrell isn't with the Philadelphia Phillies anymore, yet the City of Brotherly Love is still close to his heart. The former Philadelphia slugger took out large ads in two of the city's largest newspapers to thank the fans for their support during his nine seasons with the club. Burrell left town after helping the Phillies win their first championship since 1980. He signed in January with the Tampa Bay Rays, the team the Phillies beat in the World Series. In the advertisements in The Philadelphia Inquirer and the Daily News, Burrell thanked the fans for sharing a championship parade with him.

Around the bases

Hanley Ramirez doubled, stole a base and scored a run as the Florida Marlins dropped a 9-2 decision against the Atlanta Braves. ... Prince Fielder hit his second homer in as many days as the Milwaukee Brewers beat a split squad of Kansas City Royals, 5-1.
