Dane Johnson has been attending the Dapper Dan Wrestling Classic for years.
"It's so exciting," said Johnson, a senior at Shady Side Academy. "I've always wondered what it would be like to wrestle in The Classic."
Johnson won't have to wonder much longer. He will compete in the feature match as a member of the Pennsylvania All-Star team.
"I'm really looking forward to my match with Eric Grajales," said Johnson, who won four WPIAL Class AA titles and three PIAA crowns in his high school career. "He's unbeaten in high school competition. It would be great to be the first to beat him."
Johnson (182-11) and Grajales (217-0) will meet in the 140-pound match. Grajales, a University of Michigan recruit, is a four-time Florida champion from Brandon High School. He competed at 135 this season, but will move up to 140 for The Classic.
"Being chosen to wrestle in The Classic is a huge honor," Johnson said. "Having it at the [Fitzgerald] Field House is a bonus."
Johnson has accepted a scholarship offer from Pitt and will room with another member of the Pennsylvania All-Star team, Anthony Zanetta.
Zanetta (155-14) is a two-time PIAA Class AA champion from Keystone Oaks who won his most recent title at 119 pounds, He will drop to 112 for The Classic, as wrestlers are given a 5-pound weight allowance.
"We have two 119-pounders who have won multiple PIAA titles," said Frank Vulcano Jr., co-director of The Dapper Dan Wrestling Classic, also referring to Penn-Trafford's Shane Young. "Both deserve to be on the Pennsylvania team, so we asked Anthony to move down."
Zanetta will face Robert Dyar (185-19), a two-time Alabama champion from Vestavia Hills High School. Dyar, a Columbia University recruit, is the first wrestler from Alabama to be chosen for the United States All-Star team.
"It's such an honor to be chosen for The Classic," Zanetta said. "It's a great way to finish my high school career. Having the match at Pitt is even better considering I'll be wrestling there in college. I live 10 minutes away from [Fitzgerald]."
Young is a three-time Class AAA WPIAL and PIAA champion who concluded his career at Penn-Trafford with a 153-19 record. His opponent in the 119-pound bout is Tyler Cox (160-2), a two-time Wyoming champion from Campbell County High School in Gillette, Wyo. Cox is a University of Wyoming recruit.
Johnson, Zanetta and Young are three of six WPIAL wrestlers on the Pennsylvania All-Stars. The others are North Allegheny's Joe Waltko, Greater Latrobe's Joey Walters and Hempfield Area's Jake Kemerer.
Waltko (144-20) won the PIAA Class AAA title at 130 pounds. His opponent is Tony Ramos (190-6), a three-time Illinois champion from Glenbard North High School in Carol Streams, Ill.
Walters (129-32) is a PIAA Class AAA runner-up at 135 pounds. He will be facing David Taylor (180-2), a four-time Ohio champion from St. Paris Graham High School. Taylor is an Iowa State University recruit.
Kemerer (174-21) is a two-time PIAA Class AAA champion at 160. His opponent is Dallas Bailey (132-4), a four-time Oklahoma champion from Catoosa High School and an Oklahoma State University recruit.
"I've never been to The Classic before," Kemerer said. "It will be a great experience. I'm looking forward to it."
The six-man WPIAL contingent on the Pennsylvania All-Stars marks only the fourth time in the 35-year history of The Classic in which six or more WPIAL wrestlers have been chosen.
