Boys's Roundup: Erie Prep defeats Central
Mt. Lebanon edges State College to advance to quarters

Rasean Thrower and Andrew Sweny each had 16 points as Erie Cathedral Prep came from behind in a tight fourth quarter to defeat Central Catholic, 60-58, in a PIAA Class AAAA second-round playoff game last night at Sharon.

Evan Tsudis had 20 points and 12 rebounds for his 12th double-double of the season for Central Catholic (17-10), which began the game on a 8-0 run and later clawed back from a nine-point deficit to take a 51-50 lead with 3:23 left.

Thrower had seven points and Sweny eight in the fourth quarter for the Ramblers (17-9), who also got 13 points from Ryan Dougan.

Second-round winners advanced to quarterfinal games Friday or Saturday.

Other Class AAAA

• Mt. Lebanon 51, State College 49: Deion Turman's 3-point play with 17.7 seconds left allowed the Blue Devils (23-5) to win at Central Cambria. Paul Lang had 21 points to lead Mt. Lebanon, which trailed much the fourth quarter. Jamar Smack had 24 points and Bernard Smack 14 for the Little Lions (15-8). Turman finished with nine points, as did the Blue Devils' Evan Pierce.

Class AA

• North Catholic 40, Mercyhurst Prep 23: Jesse Long had 12 points and the Trojans' defense turned in their best performance of the season in a win at Edinboro. WPIAL champion North Catholic (26-2) actually trailed, 11-9, at the end of the first quarter but shut out the Lakers (23-4) in the second quarter and allowed only six points each in the third and fourth periods. Still, the Trojans led by only five heading into the fourth. Josh Chojnacki's 13 points led Mercyhurst Prep.

• Aliquippa 68, Central Cambria 47: At the Palumbo Center, Aliquippa (16-8) held high-scoring Central Cambria guard Jordan Miller to 19 points to earn a quarterfinal berth for the 11th time in 21 seasons. Miller, who averages 33 points, made 7 of 15 shots and had trouble getting loose from Aliquippa's man-to-man defense. Trailing Central Cambria (14-14) for most of the first half, the Quips surged to take a 31-28 halftime lead and went on a 19-6 run to begin the second half. Jawan Gilliam led the Quips with 17 points and 10 rebounds.

• Washington 60, Quaker Valley 38: Washington (24-3) limited Quaker Valley (18-7) to its second-fewest points of the season en route to a win at the Palumbo Center. Washington's Nick Bryant had 20 points and nine rebounds, and Troy Wilson added 18 points, including 12 in the first half. Casey Courneen scored all of his team-high 12 points on 3-pointers for Quaker Valley.
