Norwin to hire soccer coach
Thursday, March 12, 2009

Norwin school directors are scheduled to vote Monday night for a successor to Dana Ferry as head coach for the girls' varsity soccer team.

The new coach will come from among three candidates interviewed a second time this past Monday, and may be from a non-WPIAL school.

A large crowd is possible Monday, and if so, board President Robert Perkins said arrangements have been made to move the meeting from the administration building to the high school auditorium.

Director Tom Sturm informed the rest of the board that he would not vote in favor of hiring a new soccer coach

"I will not be voting against a coach," Mr. Sturm explained. "I will be voting against the board's policy regarding situations of this sort. During my two tenures on this board, I've seen many coaches fired, some for the wrong reasons. We're sending the wrong message to people."

School directors and administrators decided to interview certain candidates for a second time, following a Feb. 16 attempt to reappoint Mr. Ferry that was scuttled by emotional pleas from parents and some players, past and current.
