At a meeting last Thursday, the Westmoreland County commissioners unanimously approved spending $158,000 to finish a fence in the county jail that will prevent inmates from jumping from the second-story balcony into the atrium.
Commissioner Tom Ceraso said at least three inmates had attempted suicide by jumping from the balcony, so it was decided to build a fence running from the balcony to the ceiling.
The county contracted with Allegheny Fence Construction Co. Inc. and Redrock Fence Co. to do the work.
