It was a scene straight out of kindergarten, except in this case the setting was a Scott nursing home and the three participants ranged in age from 76 to 80.
A female resident of Sunrise Assisted Living of South Hills and her female friend were accused of attacking a 77-year-old man about 5:30 p.m. Sunday.
The alleged assault in a common area of the building on Greentree Road prompted two staff members who witnessed the altercation to call police.
Harassment citations were issued to Frances Dorrian, 80, and Catherine McFarren, 76, after the victim, also a Sunrise resident, insisted that police file charges because he suffered bruises on his hands and arms, and he reported neck pain, Scott police Chief James Secreet said.
The Post-Gazette does not identify the names of assault victims.
According to the police report, which was backed up by the staff members' statements, the man was sitting at a table and singing to himself when Ms. Dorrian suddenly started smacking him on the head. The blows knocked his eyeglasses off.
Ms. McFarren then allegedly jumped into the fray by pulling on the man's arms and hands.
The victim told police the squabble started because the women wanted him to stop singing but that he didn't want to, according to the police report.
The report also states that Ms. Dorrian told police the victim was rude and insulting, but added that she suffers from memory loss and doesn't recall exactly what happened.
Ms. McFarren said she wasn't sure what started the commotion, but that she jumped in to help her friend.
Chief Secreet said the harassment charges, which are summary offenses, carry fines in the $25-$300 range. In lieu of paying the fines, the women could request a hearing before Scott District Magistrate Gary Zyra.
