HARRISBURG -- Gov. Ed Rendell today bumped up the amount of federal stimulus money coming to Pennsylvania to $17.8 billion, up from the original estimate of $16 billion made several weeks ago.
There are two pots of money, $9.8 billion coming to the state and $8 billion coming to individuals. Both amounts will cover a two-year period, fiscal 2009-10 (which starts July 1) and fiscal 2010-11, (which starts July 1, 2010.)
The state money includes $4 billion for Medicaid health coverage for elderly and lower-income people; $2.56 billion for education; and $1.4 billion for road, bridge and mass transit projects.
The other pot of money will pay for a $400 tax credit for individuals making $75,000 a year or less, or $800 for couples making less than $150,000 a year; and a $2,500 per student tax credit for parents of college students.
He also set up a new Web site, www.recovery.pa.gov for people to learn more about the stimulus spending.
