Settlement reported near on Wilkins chief's suit
Thursday, February 26, 2009

A more than 2 1/2-year legal battle between Wilkins Township Police Chief Keith Guthrie and township officials was apparently settled during a mediation on Tuesday, but both sides are apparently still working out the details.

In May 2006, Chief Guthrie sued the township, township manager Rebecca Bradley, assistant manager Paul Vargo, and Commissioners William Wilson, Paul Padula, Frank Greco and Sylvia Martinelli for alleged violations of the whistleblower law. The suit alleged Chief Guthrie was punished for reporting attempts by Mr. Wilson and Mr. Vargo to fix tickets as well as other acts of misconduct by township officials.

Commissioners confirmed the township insurance carrier would pay Chief Guthrie $50,000 and the township would provide appropriate sick, vacation and personal pay as part of a severance package if he settles the suit and retires from the force. However, it is not clear that Chief Guthrie has signed off on the agreement. Records from the settlement conference at federal Judge Lisa Pupo Lenihan's court indicate that the case has been resolved, but several commissioners said Chief Guthrie left the mediation session prior to signing the agreement.

Ms. Bradley said Chief Guthrie's attorney Pat Sorek and township representative Erica Clarke were working to complete a joint press release on the matter but would not comment further. Mr. Sorek, Ms. Clarke and Chief Guthrie did not return calls for comment.
