Years from now, Luke Hagy's scoreline won't be impressive from last night's WPIAL Class AAAA semifinal.
A Mt. Lebanon freshman guard, Hagy had just three points; a layup in the first quarter and a late-game free throw.
But there was more to his performance -- plenty more.
Hagy had seven assists and three steals, two of those coming in the final 28.8 seconds, to seal a 36-35 victory for Mt. Lebanon (21-4) against North Hills (17-8) at Chartiers Valley.
With North Hills trailing, 35-32, Hagy slipped through and pilfered an inbounds pass. Then, after North Hills had forced a turnover on Mt. Lebanon's ensuing possession, Hagy nudged through a screen, stepped into the passing lane and intercepted another pass with 12 seconds left. He then went to the line and knocked in the front end of a one-and-one, giving Mt. Lebanon a 36-32 lead that was narrowed when North Hills senior Cody Patton hit a desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer.
But the two steals and free throw from Hagy unequivocally put it out of reach.
"Those are the kinds of plays he's been making all year," Mt. Lebanon coach Joey David said of Hagy.
With the victory, Mt. Lebanon advanced to the WPIAL championship game where the Blue Devils will face Section 4 nemesis Peters Township at 9 p.m. Saturday at the Palumbo Center. The teams split their regular-season meetings.
North Hills had trouble early with the Mt. Lebanon pressure, turning the ball over on six consecutive trips late in the first quarter that led to the Blue Devils grabbing an 11-2 advantage. North Hills hit just one of its first 12 shots and turned the ball over nine times.
Still, for how poorly the Indians played offensively, Mt. Lebanon never pulled away in that first half.
Patton, who scored a game-high 15 points, hit two 3-pointers in the opening minutes of the second quarter, and the Indians began to find some continuity, scratching back to make it 15-11 at halftime.
"We felt good at that point," North Hills coach Buzz Gabos said. "We kept telling the kids, 'Keep playing defense, no matter how bad we played on offense, we are right in this.' "
North Hills took a 20-19 lead midway through the third quarter when Patton hit a driving layup after a steal and held a 24-23 advantage at the end of the third quarter.
Mt. Lebanon wrestled the lead back when Evan Pierce -- who scored a team-high 11 -- hit a 3-pointer to open the fourth quarter. North Hills tied it, 28-28, but in the final few seconds, when the Indians found themselves in a hole, Hagy made sure Mt. Lebanon went to the final.
Other semifinal
Peters Township 58, Seneca Valley 52: Nick Wilcox scored 31 points -- including 4-for-4 free-throw shooting in overtime -- to lift Peters Township (22-2) into its first WPIAL final with a victory against Seneca Valley (16-8) at North Allegheny. Wilcox also had 10 rebounds and offset an 18-point, 15-rebound performance from Seneca Valley senior C.J. Brown, who hit two free throws late in regulation, sending the game to overtime. Seneca Valley was held scoreless in overtime, while all of Peters Township's points came from the free-throw line.
