Wilkins transfers funds to road-paving program
Tuesday, February 24, 2009

The Wilkins Township Board of Commissioners voted yesterday to transfer approximately $45,000 dedicated for road salt purchases and $75,000 from insurance premium payments to the 2009 road paving program.

Township Manager Rebecca Bradley said a "substantial decrease" in workman's compensation premium payments and an agreement to purchase 730 tons of salt at $42 per ton allows the township to dedicate $120,000 to this year's road projects, which were previously unfunded.

Commissioner Michael Szoko cast the only vote against the transfer, saying he would have preferred to see $60,000 dedicated to the paving program and the other half put into the township's emergency contingency fund to use during difficult financial times.

The funds do not cover all roads listed for repair, so township commissioners will vote on which roads will be paved in the next few months.
