Saturday, February 21, 2009

In the only WPIAL playoff game that matched two WPIAL champions from last season, reigning Class AA titlist South Park proved it can be a factor in Class AAA, too.

Laurel Lindsay had 13 of her 23 points in the fourth quarter as the Eagles upset defending Class AAA champion Hampton, 63-52, in a Class AAA quarterfinal last night at Fox Chapel.

"This is great for our credibility to beat the defending [Class AAA] champs," Eagles coach Reggie Wells said. "It shows that we belong."

South Park (18-6) made 19 of 22 free-throw attempts, including going 18 for 20 in the fourth quarter when the Eagles outscored the fourth-seeded Talbots, 27-20.

"We haven't been that strong from the free-throw line," Wells said. "But [this] was different. It was just like practice."

Lindsay made six free throws and Nicole Doria seven in the fourth quarter. For the game, Kaitlyn Piscatelli had 15 points and Doria 12. Laurel Hansen had 13 points to lead Hampton (18-5).
