The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission is scheduled to stock Brady's Run, Lower Hereford Manor and Raccoon Creek lakes today. Upper Twin Lakes will be stocked Tuesday. For a complete stocking schedule, visit www.fishandboat.com. Variable weather conditions are playing havoc with ice on area lakes and only some remained fishable this week. Anglers are advised to check with tackle shops and other local sources for condition updates.
Lake Erie: Steelheading was productive this week, as conditions allowed. Creeks were high and muddy yesterday but were expected to improve. Slush and ice have made morning fishing difficult until about noon. Ice in Presque Isle Bay has deteriorated and is not fishable. As of yesterday, a few anglers were ice-fishing in Misery Bay, Horseshoe Pond and the marina and catching trout, bluegills and a few perch, but ice quality there could become questionable.
Pymatuning Reservoir (Crawford County): Walleyes and crappies were hitting through the ice mid-week. Numbers of perch, including some nice ones, also were iced this week. Anglers were catching walleyes in the outflow of the river, and some hooked into muskies.
Shenango Reservoir (Mercer County): The lake was up 6 feet this week but was beginning to fall Wednesday, causing open water at the shoreline and shutting down fishing. There was open water at the causeway, too. Although some anglers were targeting recently stocked trout and walleyes below the dam, the outflow was running fast, making fishing difficult.
Lake Wilhelm (Mercer County): Although ice was reportedly fishable as of yesterday, pressure remained low this week, and yesterday's snowy, windy weather further hampered activity and threatened surface integrity. Anglers recently caught a lot of small panfish.
Lake Arthur (Butler County): As of Wednesday, edge ice was still negotiable at Muddy Creek and Shannon Run arms on the eastern end, and some tents were on the main body of the lake. Rainfall was creating a sloppy surface Wednesday, which subfreezing temperatures were expected to solidify. Bluegills, crappies and perch were reported along with a few bass in the eastern bays, and walleye was reported on the main body of the lake.
Allegheny, Monongahela and Ohio rivers: Water was high and murky on the rivers yesterday. An angler landed three walleyes, including a 24-incher, up in the mouth of Montour Run late Wednesday afternoon.
High Point Lake (Somerset County): Monday, anglers caught pickerel and pike. An angler fell through the ice about 30 feet from shore Saturday.
Youghiogheny River: As conditions allowed this week, anglers were catching recently stocked trout.
Indian Lake (Westmoreland County): As of yesterday, there was a little open water on the upper end. Andy Moder of West Mifflin and Craig Nemchik of White Oak reported big numbers of trout up to 16 inches on Fireballs.
Glendale Lake (Cambria County): Anglers caught northern pike this week at various parts of the lake. A good panfish bite also was reported around dusk.
Lake Rowena (Cambria County): Limits of trout were reported this week.
Duman Dam (Cambria County): Trout, pickerel and bass were reported.
Little Juniata River (Blair County): Flow was a little higher than usual Wednesday, running at 441 cubic feet per second; 305 cfs is average. The best tactics were streamers slowly fished along the banks and in pockets, or nymphs fished in braided water. For more on this and other central Pennsylvania streams, visit www.tcoflyfishing.com.
Spring Creek (Centre County): Good levels were reported Wednesday. Sporadic midge activity was reported, so anglers should have dry midge patterns with them, but the best tactics now are nymphing with Green Weenies, Pheasant Tails or Hare's Ears or slowly swimming or dead-drifting streamers, such as olive Slump Busters.
Deep Creek Lake (Maryland): The coves were yielding perch, walleyes, and northern pike through the ice last weekend.
