3 universities join program to help veterans pay tuition
Friday, February 20, 2009

Three more universities say they will enable certain veterans, depending on their length of service, to attend classes tuition-free under a federal program allowing schools and the federal government to split costs not covered by the GI Bill.

Pittsburgh's Chatham and Carlow universities and St. Francis University, in Loretto, Cambria County, announced yesterday that they will participate in the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs "Yellow Ribbon Program." Robert Morris University announced its plan to do so last week.

The new GI bill, signed into law last June, allows veterans and certain active duty personnel in Pennsylvania to waive an amount of tuition up to the $13,014 yearly rate charged by Penn State University, the state's most expensive public campus. The Yellow Ribbon program is intended to make private campuses more affordable for veterans.
