Q: Levance Fields seems to be asserting himself as the best point man in the nation. Who challenges him for the Bob Cousy Award (given to the nation's top point guard)?
Greg Dopilinski, Shaler
FITTIPALDO: Fields is a finalist for the award. I would have to say his top competitors are Ty Lawson from North Carolina and Stephen Curry from Davidson. Lawson has a higher profile because he plays for the Tar Heels and Curry is on more radars because he had such a great NCAA tournament run last season, when he played shooting guard. This is his first season as a point guard. Curry and Lawson are playing great, but neither can match Fields when it comes to his assist-to-turnover ratio. Fields is No. 1 in NCAA Division I in that statistical category and his numbers recently have been off the charts (61 asssits and 10 turnovers in the past six games).
But in addition to his playmaking ability, Fields is someone who takes and makes clutch shots. He did it against Duke last season at Madison Square Garden and he made two huge shots to help the Panthers beat Connecticut. Curry is a better shooter, but I don't know if I would want anyone else but Fields when the game is on the line. He has a knack for making big shots.
Fields has a good shot at the award, especially since the Panthers have been getting more national attention after beating Connecticut.
