North Shore street could be named for Chuck Noll
Monday, February 09, 2009

A new street to be built on the North Shore might be named for Chuck Noll, the Pro Football Hall of Famer who coached the Steelers to their first four Super Bowl victories.

The Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission recently approved a $1.8 million project to build the one-block street and related streetscape improvements. It will run from North Shore Drive to General Robinson Street and serve the site of a proposed 5,500-seat amphitheater next to Heinz Field.

Planning materials distributed to commission members labeled the street Chuck Noll Way, but there has been no formal proposal yet.

Mary Conturo, executive director of the city-county Sports & Exhibition Authority, which is overseeing construction, said an application to name the street is "later on down the road."

The street name must be submitted to city government for approval.

Ben Carlise, operations manager in the Public Works Department, said he has received inquiries about the street naming but no formal application yet.

He said a committee of city departments will review the application when and if it is submitted and forward its recommendation to City Council.

Other streets in the stadium complex on the North Shore are named for former Pirates great Bill Mazeroski, late Steelers owner Art Rooney and former University of Pittsburgh running back Tony Dorsett.

The new street will be funded with $730,078 earmarked in federal highway legislation known as SAFETEA-LU and nearly $1.1 million from the Sports & Exhibition Authority.

Construction is expected to begin in the spring.
