Week full of Lincoln activities

Abraham Lincoln and his wife, Mary, will return to Pittsburgh next weekend as part of Presidents Day Weekend activities at the Sen. John Heinz History Center.

This year marks the 200th anniversary of Lincoln's birth on Feb. 12, 1809, and many institutions are planning special events.

The First Couple, joined by an 8-foot-tall Uncle Sam, will greet families Saturday and next Sunday at the museum.

Other family activities planned at the History Center include a presidential trivia game and a scavenger hunt involving American flags displayed throughout the museum.

Children also will have an opportunity to make a presidential pin or campaign button.

Several libraries and other organizations also are planning special events to mark Lincoln's Bicentennial:

Tomorrow

"Ed Bearrs on the Lincoln Bicentennial" at 7 p.m. in the music hall of the Andrew Carnegie Free Library in Carnegie. Mr. Bearrs is the former Chief Historian for the National Park Service. His talk will be followed by a reception. Tickets are $10, and are available at the library or by calling 412-276-3456, ext. 2. The library is at 300 Beechwood Ave., Carnegie.

Tuesday

Woods Run's book discussion group will talk about "Lincoln: An Illustrated Biography," by Philip B. Kunhardt Jr., Philip B. Kunhardt III and Peter W. Kunhardt. The free event will start at 11:30 a.m. at the Woods Run branch of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, 1201 Woods Run Ave. Visit the library Web site at www.carnegielibrary.org or call 412-761-3730 for more information.

Wednesday

Scott Lang, author of "Forgotten Charge," a book dealing with the 123rd Pennsylvania Regiment, will talk on "Pittsburgh and Allegheny County during the Civil War." His presentation will start at 7 p.m. in the Cranberry Township Senior/Teen Center, 2525 Rochester Road. Admission is free but those attending are asked to call the Cranberry Library circulation desk at 724-776-9100.

Thursday

The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh's Lawrenceville branch will have family-friendly Lincoln-themed activities starting at 4:30 p.m. The event is appropriate for children ages 7 and up. The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh's Beechview branch will offer "Lincoln, a 200th Birthday Celebration" at 5:30 p.m. The library is at 1910 Broadway Ave. Participants will learn about the Lincoln who loved to read, to tell a good joke and to serve America. "Honest Abe and Barack Obama" is the topic for a program for children ages 12 and up at the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh's Hazelwood branch, 4901 Second Ave. The program will start at 4:30 p.m. Participants will consider such questions as "Who was Abraham Lincoln, really?"
