WQED executives have opted to delay the analog shutoff of WQED until April 1. Sister station WQEX will still terminate its analog signal Feb. 17.
Initially, WQED executives said they wanted to shut off both stations' analog signals on Feb. 17 because it would cost $50,000 to operate analog signals for both for an additional four months. The new mandatory analog shutoff date is June 12.
Yesterday WQED executives said in evaluating the financial ramifications of a Feb. 17 shutoff, they opted to extend WQED's analog signal through the annual March fund-raising period.
Christian broadcaster WPCB will shut down its analog signal March 17, pending approval from the Federal Communications Commission.
WPGH and WPMY are expected to stick with the Feb. 17 analog shutoff date and will make a final decision by Tuesday. KDKA, WPXI and WTAE will wait until June 12 to terminate their analog signals. (Rob Owen, Post-Gazette TV editor)
