Rare flower might delay lacrosse field construction
Thursday, February 05, 2009

A rare, pretty blue flower of the buttercup variety could delay for as long as a year the construction of new lacrosse field in Franklin Park.

The state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources recently notified the borough that land in Linbrook Park where the lacrosse field is to be built could possibly be the type of place where the tall larkspur flower might grow.

There is no evidence the plant is growing anywhere on or near the land, said borough Manager Ambrose Rocca. However, the borough will probably have to hire a botanist to confirm the flower, which is listed as "critically imperiled" in Pennsylvania, is nowhere to be found.

Mr. Rocca said the borough hoped to work on the field this year so it can be used in 2010.
