Penguins call up Caputi; Kennedy suspended for fight
Monday, February 02, 2009

Power forward Luca Caputi, widely regarded as the top prospect in the Penguins' organization, has been promoted to the major-league team.

Caputi was recalled from their American Hockey League affiliate this evening, shortly after the NHL suspended right winger Tyler Kennedy for one game for his role in a fight with Toronto defenseman Luke Schenn at the Air Canada Centre last Saturday.

Kennedy will sit out the Penguins' game in Montreal Tuesday night and be eligible to return when Tampa Bay visits Mellon Arena Wednesday.

Caputi, who has 13 goals and 22 assists in 46 games with the Baby Penguins, is expected to make his NHL debut against the Canadiens. He is 20 years old, 6 foot 3, 185 pounds and was a fourth-round draft choice in 2007.

The league determined that Kennedy was in violation of Rule 70.2, ruling that he provoked a fight with Schenn upon entering the game as part of a legal line change. Kennedy said he approached Schenn only because he wanted to talk to him, presumably about a hard hit Schenn had just delivered to Penguins center Evgeni Malkin.

Kennedy will forfeit $2,912.37 in pay, with that money going to the league's Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.

More details in tomorrow's Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
