North Versailles tells workers it can't meet its payroll
Thursday, January 29, 2009

North Versailles Township commissioners notified its 30 or so municipal employees and police officers today that they will not be paid for up to eight weeks.

Employees said commission President Kash Snyder and commissioners George Beswick and Sean McGurie made their rounds in the municipal building this afternoon to explain to employees that there was not enough money to make payroll. They encouraged employees to continue doing their jobs and told them they would be paid as money became available.

Police officers arrived this afternoon to find a memo posted by Chief James Communale with a similar message. Sgt. Vince DiCenzo, Jr., the department's FOP representative, said the union will challenge the township in court for violating the contract.

In addition, six part-time officers will be laid off Saturday from the police department following the passage of a budget last Monday that eliminated those positions.

The township has nearly $400,000 in unpaid bills from last year, in part stemming from a half-million dollar shortfall in anticipated tax revenue.

More details in tomorrow's Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
