Monday, January 26, 2009

For the fifth year, the Pittsburgh Jewish Israeli Film Festival is offering free screenings of movies.

Available on a first-come, first-served basis, they will be at the SouthSide Works Cinema weekdays March 9-27. Teachers must make reservations by calling 412-992-5256 or e-mailing filmfestival@ujfpittsburgh.org to see:

"Blessed Is the Match: The Life and Death of Hannah Senesh" -- Joan Allen narrates this 45-minute documentary about the World War II-era poet and diarist who became a paratrooper and Resistance fighter. It is in English and will be shown with an Oscar-nominated 14-minute German short, "Toyland," about a fictional mother who tries to shield her young son from the truth about Jewish friends by claiming they're going to "Toyland." Suitable for grades 6 and up.

"Paper Clips" -- This perennial favorite is an extraordinary 87-minute documentary about rural Tennessee students who are determined to collect 6 million paper clips to conceptualize the reality of 6 million Jewish victims of the Holocaust. Suitable for grades 6 and up.

"One Day You'll Understand" -- Story of a Frenchman's search for the truth about his Jewish parents' wartime decisions. Paris 1987 provides the backdrop for this fictional story, in French with English subtitles. Suitable for grades 10-12.

"As Seen Through These Eyes" -- Maya Angelou narrates this 70-minute documentary about artists in the concentration camps and the images they managed to create amid the Holocaust horrors. In English. Suitable for grades 11-12.

Teacher guides and talkback sessions also can be arranged. The Heinz Endowments Small Arts Initiative sponsors the free screenings.

The lineup for the 16th annual festival, March 12-29, will be announced next month.
