Pens acquire goalie
Saturday, January 17, 2009

In a move apparently designed to give starting goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury a little more competition, the Penguins today acquired goaltender Mathieu Garon from Edmonton in a trade for backup goaltender Dany Sabourin, minor-league forward Ryan Stone and a fourth-round pick in the 2011 NHL draft.

Garon, 31, was 6-8-0 with a 3.17 goals-against average and an .895 save percentage in 15 appearances with the Oilers. He was 26-18-1, 2.66, .913 last season. He is expected to be in Pittsburgh in time for the Penguins' afternoon game tomorrow against the New York Rangers at Mellon Arena.

Sabourin was 6-8-2, 2.85, .898 in 19 games this season.

Stone, a second-round pick in the 2003 draft, spent most of his Penguins career with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton minor-league team. He has played eight NHL games, two this season.
